According to wikipedia,

the score was discovered and published in 1867,

40 years after the composer's death.

It is believed that the original work may have been named "Für Therese",

a reference to Therese Malfatti,

who was one of Beethoven's friends and students and

who turned down Beethoven's proposal in 1810

to marry the Austrian nobleman and state official Wilhelm von Droßdik.

It is possible that the discoverer of the score

incorrectly interpreted the name as Elise.
